Проектът “In Belief is Power” (2017) е провокиран от статиите в западните медии за българските “ловци на мигранти” и разглежда теми свързани с религия, политика, традиции, пропаганда и национализъм. Той ни подтиква да се запитаме върху какво са базирани нашите вярвания – какво поражда страхът към чужденците; с какво се характеризира българската идентичност; съществува ли “красив” национализъм, който би помогнал на една изчезваща нация да се самосъхрани. Заглавието на проекта е заимствано от надписа “Най-голямата сила – вярата”, изписан върху малък параклис в Странджа, в близост до границата с Турция, построен в чест на Св. Марина, чийто образ е стилизиран на плаката за изложбата.

„Живея в Холандия от седемнадесет години и като български имигрант в Западна Европа, знам колко важно е гостоприемното и приятелско отношение на местното население към новодошлите. Затова съм особено разочарована, че България, моята родна страна, от която произхождат два милиона емигранти, толерира националистически групи, преследващи мюсюлмански бежанци, пресичащи външната граница на Европейския съюз с Турция.“ – споделя авторката.

Изложбата съчетава авторски фотографии, архивни снимки, текст и рисунки, които се допълват взаимно. Подходът на Христина Ташева е изцяло субективен. Тя определя начина си на работа като „пърформативен журнализъм“ – тълкуване на реалността чрез лично преживяване, спомени и интерпретация на случващото се.

„В религията, политиката и икономиката, пропагандата се използва, за да провокира вярата във властващата идеология и осигури контрол върху хората. Затова търся усещането за театър, смесвам различни исторически периоди и проследявам влиянието им върху живота и вярванията на местното население.“

Проектът “In Belief Is Power” е издаден под формата на книга в края на 2018 г., която също е част от изложбата. Публикацията печели наградата Full Contact 2018 на фестивала SCAN в Тарагона (Испания) и е номинирана за престижните награди Unseen Dummy Award 2018, PHE19 Best Photography Book of the Year Award и Dutch Photobook Award 2019.

За автора:

Христина Ташева е завършила Gerrit Rietveld Academy в Амстердам (2011 г.) и е получила магистърска степен по фотография в AKV St. Joost, в Бреда, Холандия (2015 г.). Родена в България, тя живее и работи в Холандия. Опитът й като източноевропейски мигрант и позицията й на гражданин са движеща сила в нейната работа. Използвайки фотография, текст, звук и пърформанс, тя задава въпросите „възможно ли е да се изгради идентичност въз основа на прилики, а не на различия? Какво е да си човек?”. Нейният проект “Imagine That The Migrant Was Not A Human Being” се осъществява по улиците на Сао Пауло и още няколко европейски столици. Звуковата й инсталация BIO ROB 2018 беше представена в Castrum Peregrini, Амстердам, и бе част от фестивала Helicotrema в Италия. Книгите, които издава "The Woman with the Brown Hair or me and my informant" и “The Queen of the Animals and the Most Beautiful Gardens” участват в изложби в САЩ и страни от Европа, като и двете са номинирани за различни награди. Последната й публикация „In Belief is Power“ печели наградата „Full Contact 2018“ на фестивала SCAN Tarragona в Испания и е номинирана за Unseen Dummy Award 2018, PHE19 Best Photography Book of the Year Award, Dutch Photobook Award 2019 and Foto Wien Photobook Award. За период от една година (2017/2018) работата ѝ се финансира от Stipendium for Emerging Artists, предоставена от Mondriaan Fund в Холандия.

The project In Belief is Power (2017) is provoked by articles in the Western media informing about the activities of the Bulgarian “migrant hunters” and addresses topics related to religion, politics, traditions, propaganda and nationalism. It prompts us to ask ourselves what our beliefs are based on – what provokes one’s fear of foreigners; what characterizes the Bulgarian identity; is there a "beautiful" nationalism that would help a vanishing nation preserve itself? The title of the project is borrowed from the inscription "The Greatest Power – Faith", written on a small chapel in Strandzha Mountain, near the border with Turkey, built in honor of St. Marina, whose image is stylized on the poster of the exhibition.

"I live in the Netherlands already for seventeen years and as a Bulgarian immigrant in Western Europe, I know the importance of the welcoming and friendly attitude of the local population towards newcomers. That is why I am particularly disappointed that Bulgaria, my home country, from which two million emigrants are descended, tolerates nationalist groups persecuting Muslim refugees crossing the European Union's external border with Turkey."

The exhibition combines author’s images, archival photographs, text and drawings that complement each other. Hristina Tasheva's approach is entirely subjective. She describes her work as "performative journalism" – reality is interpreted by personal experience and memories, experiment, restoring what is happening so that the viewer/audience can feel a different perspective.

"In religion, politics and economics, propaganda is used to provoke belief in governing ideology and to control people. That is why by the editing of the material, the feeling of theater, dressing up and posing prevail, the mixing of historical periods and their influence on the life and beliefs of the local population (known as the "purest" Bulgarians)."

The project In Belief Is Power was released in the form of a book at the end of 2018, which will be also part of the exhibition. The publication has won the Full Contact 2018 Award at the SCAN Festival in Tarragona (Spain) and has been nominated for the prestigious Unseen Dummy Award 2018, PHE19 Best Photography Book of the Year Award and the 2019 Dutch Photobook Award.

About the author:

Hristina Tasheva graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (2011) and earned her MA in Photography at AKV St. Joost, in Breda, the Netherlands (2015). Born in Bulgaria, she lives and works in the Netherlands. Her experience as an Eastern European migrant and her position as a citizen are a driving force in her work. Using photography, text, sound and performance, she asks “is it possible to build identities based on similarities and not on differences? What is it like to be a human?”. Her artistic project “Imagine That The Migrant Was Not A Human Being” took place in the streets of Sao Paulo and several European capital cities. Her sound installation BIO ROB 2018 was presented in Castrum Peregrini, Amsterdam, and part of the Helicotrema Festival in Italy. Her self-published books "The Woman with the Brown Hair or me and my informant" and “The Queen of the Animals and the Most Beautiful Gardens” have appeared in exhibitions in the USA and numerous European countries, and both photobooks have been shortlisted for several awards. Her latest publication, “In Belief is Power”, won the Full Contact 2018 Award at SCAN Tarragona Festival in Spain, and it has been nominated for the Unseen Dummy Award, PHE19 Best Photography Book of the Year Award, Dutch Photobook Award and Foto Wien Photobook Award. In 2017, Hristina Tasheva was the recipient

of the Mondriaan Fund Stipendium for Emerging Artists.
